Aside from engines, the 1972 Torino was all-new — and a giant disappointment.
The rationale was the first all-new postwar Fords that went on sale with nice anticipation in June 1948. One exterior crew was headed by George Walker, who employed onetime GM and Raymond Loewy worker Richard Caleal to hitch designers Joe Oros and Elwood Engel. Working in his kitchen with clay modelers Joe Thompson and John Lutz, Caleal shaped his design.T. Among them was no lower than John Dillinger, who wrote Henry to reward the product — an unsolicited testimonial from Public Enemy Number one.
With all this, Slingshot Ford Division remained “USA-1” within the early ’90s, Diamond Painting selling effectively over a million automobiles a year and a like variety of light trucks. While Ford’s whole volume improved to near 691,500, Diamond Painting UK it remained about two-thirds of Chevy’s, which went up even more, to slightly over one million. Henry’s choice to abandon his treasured “Tin Lizzie” after 19 years and a staggering 15-million vehicles — the last not very totally different from the first — came almost too late, and his firm lost rather a lot in cash and goodwill throughout the lengthy changeover to the belated new Model A.
Ford built greater than 1.1 million vehicles for 1930 — almost twice as many as Chevrolet and greater than 14 instances as many as Plymouth. All models retained the “little Lincoln” styling crafted by Henry’s artistic son Edsel (who was named Ford Motor Company president in 1919), but the fenders have been decrease and wider, the hoodline was greater, and stainless steel replaced nickel plate on the radiator and headlight shells. Some sellers had been disappointed in Edsel Ford’s new Mercury, feeling a six-cylinder Ford would have been a better concept (which was, actually, the original concept).
