If you’re like me the BS alarms stop when you see the words diet and tablet anywhere near each other. Weight loss is really a direct mathematical proposition. If more calories are consumed by you than you burn off – weight is gained by you. If you eat up fewer calories than you burn off – weight is lost by you. Weight loss works as certain as the laws of gravity. No exceptions. The possibility of waking up in the morning to discover that pounds of fat have flown off your system can be as likely as finding that your vehicle has flown onto the roof of the nearest building.
So forgive my disbelief each time a friend emailed me a BBC article (BBC. Mary Mangold. May 30, 2003) about a “Kalahari cactus diet.” I read it. I did a bit more study. I’m certain!
Because within the hypothalamus you will find nerve cells that sense glucose sugar also hungry people do not eat themselves to death. Food use puts sugar into the bloodstream. The sugar changes to glucose. The hypothalamus senses the change in glucose and fundamentally tells the human brain that immediate survival is guaranteed and that it’s OK to stop eating.
Well, this Kalahari cactus, called hoodia, includes a molecule which boffins have named p.57 that’s about 10,000 times more mixed up in hypothalmus than glucose.
That means that hoodia shoots those glucose sugar nerve cells making your brain think you’re full. You may not have eaten anything more. And so you do not even desire to.
Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes (CBS) traveled to the Kalahari to do a show about hoodia. Stahl tried it. Said it tasted like cucumber and, most of all, did not have any want to eat or drink for the remainder of your day. She reported there were no after effects or side effects.
Major pharma has got with this and they will be able to synthesize p.57 probably some day. But for now Mother Nature hasn’t given up her secrets and the only way to benefit from what the BBC call “an organic pill that kills the attacks and appetite obesity” is always to get normal hoodia from the Kalahari. There are plans to farm the plant but nobody knows without a doubt if commercially grown hoodia will whilst the wild plant have the same properties.
Apparently not totally all hoodia is similar. Just Hoodia gordonii has p.57. Other Kalahari cactus plants are…cactus. The USA government and the South African government control the harvesting and importation of Hoodia gordonii. Only companies licensed by the Western Cape Conservation Authority of South Africa, and who have the Certificates to prove it, are available the real article. This unique there are lots of exploiters to ensure that Certificate of authenticity is very important as you’d expect with something.
For communities where obesity is a legitimate national health issue, a natural, secure and effective appetite suppressant can not be something other than a good thing. You have to wonder in regards to the durability of the supply however.
For personal use you will find other factors. The body requires a daily way to obtain protein and other nutrients to healthy and to function normally. Is Hoodia gordonii therefore effective that you will not eat even the minimum quantities? Or drink a healthy volume of water?
