I still remember years ago when I first started to play tennis, the end you heard the absolute most was “keep your head still.” My dad used to state this to me at the very least 50 times a round. He thought he was doing me a really, he should have been telling me to do the exact opposite. He must have been saying “move your face a little on the way back.”
Why move your head as you simply take the club right back? You want to move your head because so as to swing in a circular movement you require an to swing around. An axis has a bottom and a top. You have 1 top to an axis (your head) and 2 feet (your feet) and legs to an axis, when you setup to the golf ball. Which means that along the way back your mind should be going 3 – 5 inches to the proper so as to create your first axis to swing around. Your mind will stay there as you come down and fall even further right back through effect. Then, following the ball has been hit, your mind will progress over top of the left knee to produce a second axis. This 2nd axis will allow you to complete the circular rotation in your golf swing allowing your swing to be finished by you. Just what exactly you have is a floating top to an axis. Your mind drifts back and forth to create 2 axis when you move. This allows you to swing in a circular motion. It’s not just a great circle however. It’s a small oval. Because your swing is really a slight square, you’ll never hit the ball one hundred thousand great.
The only real time you’d keep your face is still if you had one leg. You would have 1 top and 1 bottom to an axis, if you had one leg. This implies that if your head was moved by you you would destroy this axis. So maybe we have to all be playing looking at one leg and keeping our head still? However, this will never work because you’ll not produce enough power and you’ll probably fall over. A lot of people have sufficient trouble keeping their balance with 2 legs never mind 1 so it is best that you learn to move your head and hold both legs on the ground.
Most people I teach try to move their head back when I tell them to because it feels so uncomfortable for them to move their head however they have a hard time actually doing it. You should feel like your mind is going about 1 foot to the right, to get the correct experience. Should you feel like your face is moving 1 foot to the right on your way back, it will actually only move a couple of inches. Decide to try moving often towards a mirror. if your head is going back 3-5 inches as you watch yourself move, you can clearly see. As your face moves back, feel how your weight hundreds in to the right knee. This is the tell tale sign that you have created your first axis in the backswing. If you do not have a packed, powerful feeling in your right leg, you will have to move your head a tad bit more as you go back. If you’re wearing when you play golf just a take your backswing and search to see if the brim of the hat is level to the floor not tilted to the left. If the top of the hat is level to the floor at the top of your backswing your mind may have moved the appropriate amount. As just ask a buddy to watch your mind to see if it goes back a few inches or work with a video camera to see yourself a final check. If your head is too still then constantly remind yourself to maneuver it right back or have some one constantly remind you to “move your head.”
Beware that it may cause you going to behind the ball a little, as your head is moved by you back. This can be a good sign at first. It’s telling you that you are moving your head back but you have too much weight in your right foot at impact. All you need to do is feel a bit more fat shift off of your right foot through impact, to treat hitting behind the ball (fat photos). You’ll hit the ball perfectly and with much more power than you are used to, if you do.
Until the next time,
