Robert the Bruce was crowned king of Scotland in Dundee – the season 1309. He could not have wished for an even more beautiful environment to technically wear his crown for the first time.
Dunde…
Dundee (Gaelic – Dn Dagh – Dun means ft) has an interesting and amazing history. The environment is visually beautiful and rivals any town in Bonny Scotland. What the law states (meaning hill), once a dynamic volcano, sits at the heart of Dundee giving a romantic vantage point out all sides of City.
Robert the Bruce was crowned king of Scotland in Dundee – the entire year 1309. He couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful setting to formally wear his crown for the very first time.
Dundee has been identified for the three Js – Jam, Jute & Journalism, but now just one T survives – Journalism. When jute was being stated in Dundee, the city had more millionaires per square mile than every other city in the UK. Even though business has died rapidly in the town, technology is successful and the two main Universities are supported by this – Dundee University & Abertay.
Journalism is still going strong in the town and that is just due to the business skills used by the administration. DC Thomson’s have made some amazing characters in their comic textbooks (Desperate Dan, Billy Whizz & my favourite character – Rodger the Dodger) which still haven’t been used fully in the new media age most of us reside in. Probably like Marvel it might take a change of management, or even a younger DC generation before the great people that DC has generated is exploited fully.
Shipbuilding and the whaling industry also played a major part in Dundee. Dundee gets the unenviable reputation of being the king in conditions of whales killed per head of citizenry in Scotland. The men who ventured out in mid cold weather to harpoon the whales, whilst misguided were most likely the bravest men you can ever meet. Even now you obtain the occasional whale swimming into the river Tay and ideally escaping back into the oceans.
Dundee is currently turning into a frontier community all over again and provides easy access to the others of Scotland although keeping its relaxed pace of life. The three major towns of Bonny Scotland are within easy reach as is St Andrews, your home of golfing and Perth which if it continues growing at exactly the same rate will soon turn into a city! Dundee is preferably destination for a visit and admire the pure beauty of Scotland.
The “Silvery” River Tay is equally beautiful and geographically important. The railway bridge has played an important part in UK history. Johnson Bouch designed the bridge and was ultimately charged whenever a section of it collapsed throughout a storm in 1879. It’s now considered by some that it wasn’t his style the culprit however the contractors who used poor quality product to save costs. That is probably where the saying “it’s a botch up” originates from.
Dundee has many tourist attractions such as the Discovery Ship & the Frigate Unicorn. Unicorn is the oldest surviving wooden battle ship in britain.
If you should be searching for amusement, Dundee has all of it. Music is well and alive and the bars and nightclubs are 2nd to none. For the younger generation the west end is filled with exciting and sophisticated drinking holes like the DCA. You will maybe not fail at Fat Sams or the London Night Club if you wish to party the night away.
In Broughty Ferry a bar worth a trip is the Fisherman’s Tavern. Broughty Ferry is more inviting to people that are buying a more relaxed pace of life.
Dundee has such an amazing record that it is impossible to do it justice in such a quick article. Whatever you’re searching for in a city you’ll not go far wrong by coming to the Banks of the Silvery Tay and sample the pleasures this city provides in Bonny Scotland.
