Why ultralight sleeping bags? Since ultralight hiking is only authorized by reducing the weight of the “big three;” the backpack, sleeping bag and housing. The occasions of five-pound summer bags are gone – at the very least for all those of us who choose to get light.
One Lb Ultralight Sleeping Bags
There are many one-pound ultralight sleeping bags on the market now. My own is 17 ounces. It actually weighs 19 ounces with the stuff bag, but stuff bags are not always necessary. It may be loaded straight into my pack or put in a half-ounce bread bag. It is a sleeping bag, and has kept me warm down to below freezing – hotter, in fact, than my four-pound bag used to keep me.
It appears delicate, and I’ve babied it over time, but it may be tougher than I thought. I have used it from sea-level to 16,000 feet, in every types of climate, generally camping under a, yet it still has its loft, and it looks almost new. The freezer goes only half-way down, to save lots of weight, and it’s a mummy case, but I’m 6’3″, 165 pounds, and I’ve been comfortable in it.
Resting bags weighing around an are summer bags, rated down seriously to 40 to 50 degrees fahrenheit. A fast check always of the modern bags on the market, though, implies that even one or two of the 0 degree bags are under three pounds now. These are down filled bags, needless to say, as down continues to be the lightest efficiency for its weight.
Still another major benefit of any down sleeping bag is it is compressibility. Nothing packages smaller than down. But, a great synthetic case is probably better than down if you’re frequently getting hired wet.
A few sythetic-fill sleeping bags now come near to down in their warmth-to-weight ratio. A minumum of one summer case, using Polarguard load, weighs an even 16 ounces. That’s incredibly light for a synthetic case.
Using Ultralight Sleeping Bags
Ultralight sleeping bags broadly speaking aren’t hard. They are treated by the lighter the bag, the more fragile, but carefully, and they work good. I have used mine for many years, in snow and rain, from Ecuador to California to Michigan, and it shows little use. Baby these things, and a long time can be lasted by them.
